Behold the ~1990-something Softball Jacket
Recently, something happened that I’ve never experienced in 34+ years of playing softball and participating in team sports.
At a local game, a woman from another team took my softball bat, after I told her it was mine because it looked like one she had “lost” the week before. Her timeline didn’t add up as I hadn’t been even playing at the field she was at the week before.
What followed was a surreal series of events: She ignored my words, took it anyway, then called me “a liar” in front of my ten-year-old when I calmly reiterated it was my property. She spun the story, manipulated the moment, and tried to bait me into a public confrontation. I didn’t take the bait. But I didn’t let it go.
Instead, I did what I’ve learned to do:
📂 I gathered receipts (literally and figuratively).
🗣 I leaned on community support and testimonials.
📨 I went through the proper channels.
⚖️ I stood my ground, with integrity, not aggression.
Eventually, after involving the league and reminding folks of the legal implications, the bat was returned to me. No shouting, no retaliation, just a clear line in the sand, and the confidence to hold it. The $120 bat was hardly worth the time I spent fighting to get it back, but it’s the principal of the thing.
Here’s what I walked away with, and why I’m sharing this story now:
🧠 What We Practice Shows Up Under Pressure
We often think integrity is about big moments. But it’s in the small ones, like choosing not to retaliate when you’re publicly disrespected, that your values really show.
👊 Self-Advocacy Isn’t Aggression.
It’s clarity. It’s standing up for yourself without turning to shame, blame, or escalation. It’s knowing the difference between setting boundaries and starting a fight.
⚖️ Eye for an Eye Solves Nothing.
Someone else losing something does not entitle them to take from you. That’s not justice. That’s justification. And when we allow it, especially in community, we erode trust for everyone.
🤝 Community Requires Accountability.
I’ve lived in Tahoe for nearly 20 years. I’ve coached, volunteered, hosted, played, built. This is my community. And if I want it to reflect the values I believe in, integrity, fairness, decency, I have to be willing to protect that vision, even when it’s uncomfortable.
🌲 What Kind of Community Do You Want?
We all have a role in shaping the spaces we live, play, and work in.
It’s not just about what happens when things are going great.
It’s about how we respond when they’re not.
💬 See something? Say something.
🧭 Speak truth, even when it’s hard.
🌱 Hold the line with calm conviction.
I didn’t yell. I didn’t shame. But I didn’t back down.
And I hope this reminds you that you don’t have to choose between peace and power.
You can act with grace, and still be strong.
